To optimize the capacity and life of your NiMH (nick-metal hydride) batteries, follow these smart storage, cycling, and charging practices.
Storage and Cycling * Store in a climate-controlled environment and 65% (±20%) humidity if possible.
* Rotate inventory FIFO (first in, first out)
* Cycle (charge then discharge) depending on ambient temperature
- At -4 °F to 86 °F (-20 °C to 30 °C), store 3-6 months, then cycle.
- At 86 °F to 104 °F (30 °C to 40 °C), store 1-3 months, then cycle.
- At 104 °F to 122 °F (40 °C to 50 °C), store 1 month, then cycle.
If batteries are stored longer than recommeneded, cells need to be cycled (charged then discharged) 3 times before achieving up to 100% capacity.
ChargingAvoid storing fully discharged batteries in an indicator. An indicator will shut off when batteries are at a safe discharge level but will continue to draw a small amount of power. In order to prevent damage to the cells, we recommend plugging in the indicator or removing the discharged batteries for remote recharging before storing them.
Battery BackupIf batteries are used as battery backup with the indicator plugged in continuously, we recommend unplugging the indicator once every 1-3 months to fully discharge the battery. When the indicator is plugged back in, it will automatically resotre and optimize the battery capacity.
